HESH_FINDINGNOVYON_INTERVIEW
THE WORLD IS GOING FIND OUT SOONER OR LATER ABOUT A LOCAL MINNEAPOLIS ARTIST, FINDING NOVYON (NOVEE-YON). HAILING FROM BROOKLYN PARK AND GRADUATING FROM PATRICK HENRY OVER NORTHSIDE MINNEAPOLIS, FINDING NOVYON STARTED WRITING MUSIC AT AGE TWELVE AND PUTTING IT OUT AT SIXTEEN. HAVING PUT OUT NINE PROJECTS SINCE THEN, THEHESH.COM FINALLY FOUND NOVYON FOR THE FIRST TIME AT DEQUEAXATRON MID APRIL OF THIS YEAR, PREFORMING A THEN UNRELEASED TRACK FEATURING ALLAN KINGDOM TITLED ‘LOTS‘. THE HESH WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO GET THE BLESSING FROM TIIIIIIIIIIP TO LURK IN THE VIP SECTION BEHIND THE DJ BOOTH DURING THE PREFORMANCE. YA BOY WAS LIT, BUT SOMEHOW MANAGED TO RECORD VARIOUS PARTS OF THE PREFORMANCE. (DEFINATELY WOULDA LEFT THE CAMERA RUNNING IF IDA KNOWN SUCH AN IMPORTANT MOMENT IN HISTORY WAS GOING DOWN.) WATCHED MY BOOTLEG LIVE VERSION OF ‘LOTS’ FOR A GOOD COUPLE MONTHS TIL THE STUDIO VERSION WAS RELEASED ON THE WORLD THIS PAST MONDAY. WITH ALMOST 25K PLAYS IN 3 DAYS, YOU KNOW LOTS MORE IS IN STORE FOR FINDING NOVYON AND HIS NEW PROJECT #THEFOODNETWORK. WE CAUGHT UP WITH HIM ON TWITTER DM’S TO ASK HIM LOTS MORE ABOUT ‘LOTS’ AND MORE!

THE HESH: #THEFOODNETWORK LOOKS SICK WHATS THE DETAILS ON THAT PROJECT?

Finding Novyon: Thanks man! So pretty much the albums almost done, fully produced by Travis Gorman. Travis and I both make up 2/4 of The Rotation. The project pretty much has a dark ominous feeling to it.. similar to ‘Lots’ but the rest of the project is 100,000 times more lyrical. We used ‘Lots’ as bait because it’s a mainstream hit, on an underground classic. The project features Metasota and Allan Kingdom, it’s set to drop within the next month or two either August or September.

THE HESH: WHATS THE IDEA BEHIND THE TITLE? DO U WATCH ALOT OF FOOD NETWORK?

Finding Novyon: The album title is pretty much a metaphor for “eating”. The tone of the album is pretty dark and serious, and more of a self-reflection of where I used to be as an Artist and how now I’m eating. All my friends are eating.

THE HESH: I WAS AT THE DEQUEAXATRON IN APRIL WHEN ERYBODY WAS RAGING BEHIND THE BOOTH AND ALLAN AND YOURSELF PREFORMED “LOTS” FOR ONE OF THE FIRST TIMES, I WAS WAITING FOREVER FOR IT TO ACTUALLY DROP AND NOW IT’S FINALLY UNLEASHED ON THE NET! HOW LONG YALL BEEN SITTING ON SUCH A HEATER OF A TRACK AND HOW DID IT ALL COME TO BE?

Finding Novyon: Yeah initially, everyone’s first thoughts were to release it right away. I felt like I didn’t have enough clout to match Allan’s at the time I sent it to him because he was buzzing really hard off of his Kanye West collaboration. It was a lot a pressure because, I didn’t want to release a song of that magnitude without more people locally knowing who I was. I waited and did a run of shows, I’ve probably done like 15 Shows since that night at Dequexatron but I’ve been sitting on the song since early February.

There’s a really funny story about the track actually, back in February, me and Travis Gorman were recording songs for #TheFoodNetwork and I did this freestyle that’s probably going to be a bonus track called “Whip Exit” I freestyled channeling my best Young Thug impersonation. (as a joke of course) But Travis ended up loving that song cause it has so much swag, so he goes “You should go home and make more Finding Novyon songs like Young Thug” ….so I went home…and made the beat for ‘Lots’ in like 20 mins, it’s honestly a really simple beat. As I was making the beat I kept chanting “I got lots, I got lots, I got lots ” then I just freestyled the first and second verses. I sent it to Travis later that night, and he automatically said “THIS NEEEDS TO BE ON OUR PROJECT!” I knew it was big when Travis said that because, he never really thinks my beats are that impressive, when he said that I was like, “Dawg you trippin!” The rest of our project is so much more lyrical and diabolical that what ‘Lots’ was. I slept on it for 3 weeks and then was like, “..you know what…let’s put it on the album..fuck it.” That was a month before Allan was even on it.

THE HESH: WE’VE BEEN BUMPING “LOTS” AN AWFUL LOT IN THE FIRST FEW DAYS IT’S DROPPED, WHAT KIND OF REACTIONS HAVE YOU BEEN GETTING?

Finding Novyon: As far as responses go, so far it’s been crazy…I mean I cant really lie and say I didn’t expect it to be this way. I was more or so nervous about how people were going to look at the song…I had a fear of being overshadowed by Allan, simply because his buzz is so big right now, and also this song doesn’t reflect my lyrical talents whatsoever, so in that sense I was pretty surprised to see the reaction from everybody. People are honestly excepting the song as a joint effort and it’s making us both hot right now, so I say it’s doing a little bit better than I expecting without a doubt.

THE HESH: ITS ALMOST LIKE WHAT IVE BEEN SEEING IN OG MACO INTERVIEWS – BRA HAS A LIBRARY OF CONTENT WITH SUCH COMPLEX LYRICS AND MESSAGES BUT TO MAKE PEOPLE PAY ATTENTION HE DID “U GUESSED IT”. IT SEEMED HE EMBRACED THE SONG AT FIRST BUT PEOPLE STILL WERE LIKE “WHENS THE NEXT ‘U GUESSED IT’ COMING OUT BRO??” I FEEL LIKE THAT MADE HIM DISLIKE THE TRACK AS OF RECENTLY, ARE YOU WORRIED THAT MIGHT HAPPEN WITH “LOTS?”

Finding Novyon: Not at all… I want that to happen actually… because, unlike OG Maco I’ve already explored many creative avenues. All of OG Maco’s music sounds the same no offense, but that’s because of his environment. In our scene we have people like Slug & artists like Prince to look up he has Gucci Mane and T.I to look up to. He made some valid points when it came down to making music that doesn’t glorify drugs, etc. but from an artist stand point all he’s doing is talking about what needs to change and pointing fingers when he could be creating it.

THE HESH: WHO ARE SOME ARTISTS THAT INFLUENCE YOUR CRAFT?

Finding Novyon: When it comes to influence it’s kind of weird for me, because I don’t have typical rapper influences. Amy Winehouse, & Aaliyah are my biggest influences and will always be. A lot of people get it misconstrued by that, because they think I’m talking about sound but really I admire their words. I’ve always been so fascinated how easily Amy could paint a metaphorical picture of her life, in a song. But in the rap world, Pharrell, Kanye West, Drake, & Tyler, the Creator are probably my biggest influences. Oh and 2006-2008 Lil Wayne, I want to resurrect ‘Da Drought’ legacy one day.. My ideal vision as a artist would probably be a Lil Wayne & Drake fusion.. Not sound wise…but work ethic wise. Lil Wayne murdered peoples songs for YEARS While Drake has the most hit’s in history. I want to have both of those strengths.

THE HESH: THE ‘DA DROUGHT’ SERIES IS SO LEGENDARY I’LL ALMOST GO AS FAR AS TO SAY THEY GO ALMOST HARDER THAN THE CARTER SERIES

Finding Novyon: Tha Carter 2 is the best Carter…all the rest are Butt, even the first lol.

THE HESH: THIS IS TRUE! HAHHA I ALWAYS FOUND MYSELF LISTENING TO SHIT OFF THE DROUGHT SERIES OVER THE CARTER

Finding Novyon: Yeah Lil Wayne albums aren’t very great, and this is coming from an Ex YMCMB affiliate, and once upon a time Weezy Stan! Lol

THE HESH: I WAS PEEPING ALOT OF YOUR SOUNDCLOUD LAST NIGHT, THE TRACK “FUCK YOUR BLOG” REALLY GRABBED MY ATTENTION, YOU MENTION YOUR YMCMB AFFILIATION IN IT, WHAT WAS ALL THAT ABOUT?

Finding Novyon: That song is really old! Recorded that back in 2013 actually. But yeah, when I was 18 fresh out of high school, I dropped a mixtape under my old alias Sweezer, B & shortly after the release I was contacted by Cortez Bryant. This was during the time when Wayne was in Rikers, probably a month before he got out. Cortez liked a specific song from my mixtape and wanted go through a program YM had at the time called the “Young Money Affiliate Program” where they gave me a list of tasks to complete in a span of two years. Looking back at it now it was just artist development at its simplest form. Even Drake was a YM affiliate at one point.

THE HESH: WHAT WERE SOME OF THE TASKS OR IS THAT TOP SECRET INFO?

Finding Novyon: Nah, it’s honestly slight work compared to my current work ethic. Some of the tasks were opening for a certain amount of professional acts, dropping a selected amount of videos and releasing three projects within a two year span, and they’d watch your growth and at the end of the two year period if you were equipped enough, you’d get a deal with YM & Universal. During the time tho.. Universal didn’t want to sign me. Wayne pushed for them to consider me..but at the time (I was 19) I didn’t have a big enough buzz.

THE HESH: SO WHAT HAPPENED? NOT THAT ITS A BAD THING, SEEING ALL THE BEEF GOIN ON BETWEEN WAYNE AN BIRDMAN RIGHT NOW.

Finding Novyon: My affiliation soon ended after that because Wayne persuaded me into believing that being an independent artist would work out better for me in the long run. it’s honestly kind of scary knowing he told me that, and seeing his current situation with Cash money.

THE HESH: YOUR LATEST VIDEO TITLED “LIQUOR WINE DELI CHEESE” CAUGHT MY EYE BECAUSE THE LIQUOR STORE FEATURED HELLA IN IT WAS MY LOCAL STORE FOR YEARS WHEN LIVING OVER BY THE MARCY HOLMES NEIGHBORHOOD, I GOTTA GIVE YOU PROPS FOR SHOOTING A MUSIC VIDEO IN FRONT OF SURDYKS!

Finding Novyon: Thanks!! That was actually RIGHT after a show I did with 26 & the Bats at Honey sometime back in March

THE HESH: WE SEEN YOU GOT A SHOW COMING UP SOON? FIRST AVE IS IT?

Finding Novyon: Yup, I’m opening for Sean Anonymous, and then I start tour with Manny Phesto, Baby Shel & My Group The Rotation next week!

THE HESH: CAN WE EXPECT A VIDEO FOR “LOTS”?

Finding Novyon: Yes!!! That’s all I can say

THEHESH: SHIT WE ALREADY KNOW IT GONE BE WILD!
